Simple and elegant, the Single Barb Makau was a favorite amongst early Polynesian settlers on Kauai. Inspired by an ancient Hawaiian fish hook found in the Bishop Museum archives, the pendant is a symbol of fortitude -- it means "you can."
Genuine Tahitian black pearl is of the highest quality (AAA-grade, with beautiful luster and color, and smooth, silky skin).

I’ve followed Keoni and Heather on Facebook for several years now and love Keoni’s various Makau pendants and sculptures. In 2008 I had to leave my home on O’ahu and move to Los Angeles. Last week I was feeling particularly sad and homesick when I viewed a beautiful single barbed hook with a translucent pearl that Heather had just posted on Facebook. I contacted her and she and Keoni answered all my questions about it and explained the beautiful symbolism that Keoni envisioned when he created his makau. Heather also suggested that I purchase a matching pair of earrings that Keoni had just completed. I decided that this Christmas, I would be gifting these beautiful pieces to myself. They arrived on Christmas Eve and when I opened the boxes, I burst into tears. They were so beautifully carved and radiated great spiritual depth. I wore them Christmas Day and received many compliments but what is even more important is that the carry my deep love for Hawai’i and warm memories of loved ones who have passed. They remind me to always “live aloha”. Mahalo nō Keoni and Heather. I will cherish them always.

I ordered a Kauai fish hook with pearl pendant online as a present for my mother. As luck would have it, my husband and I were in Kauai on vacation. After several e-mails back and forth between myself and Heather (awesome customer service), we met them at the farmers market in Hanalei to pick up the beautiful pendant. The craftsmanship and quality of the piece of jewelry are exquisite! The pearl we picked out is absolutely beautiful and makes the fish hook look amazing. After seeing the finished piece, we also bought a tattoo style fish hook and a pearl necklace for ourselves. Best purchase ever! Meeting Keoni and Heather at the farmers market will always be a memorable experience for both my husband and me because Keoni is truly a remarkable person and artist.

I can't say enough about my jewelry purchased by Keoni. I have received numerous compliments on my earrings & necklace whether it be on island or home. Keoni's work on each piece of jewelry compliments every outfit they are worn with whether it be dressing up or dressing down. I am happy that we came across them in Kauai, but especially happy you are able to order online his finest pieces. Thanks Keoni.

When looking for a meaningful gift for the most meaningful person in my life, I instantly was standing on the beach at Lumiha'i (in my mind) and thought: "you need a piece of the North Shore of Kauai and also the Spirit of the South Pacific." Well the choice was obvious. The work of Keoni and his legacy with the AAA Pearl as a cherry of sorts on top. This little beauty spoke everything I needed to say and also said the things I could not say.
Mahalo Nui Loa for your Aloha

I was looking for a pendant to get my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary, and happened on this site. Seeing that it was the perfect gift to commemorate our honeymoon in Kauai, I decided to get it. It was everything I hoped for, and more. The workmanship is wonderful, the symbolism makes it a forever gift, but most important was the spiritual gift that Keoni and Heather gave us.
I happened to order it just as hurricanes Iselle and Julio were bearing down on Kauai. Somehow, they were able to get the pendant to me 4500 miles away even as the island was shut down. I will be forever grateful that they made such a tremendous effort to get me the gift, and it actually arrived the day of our anniversary. And they were regularly letting me know what was happening.
Much Aloha to Keoni and Heather.

Keoni is the real deal! A true artist. His love for the island, love of family and ancestry, and love of all human beings breathes in his work. My husband and I saw his work on our honeymoon. I didn't buy a piece right away, and days later I was still thinking about it. Luckily, I found him online and was able to purchase an incredibly beautiful piece. It is my favorite piece of jewelry not only because it is precious and unique, but also because it represents my honeymoon, the spirit of Aloha, and everything Keoni himself represents.

I lucked into meeting Keoni and Heather at the farmers market on Kauai. I felt an instant connection to both of them. I wasn't really in the market to buy jewelry, and didn't realize that I would be looking at such fine craftsmanship in such a small and remote location. WOW, was I surprised! I learned about the legend of the fish hook necklace, and about Keoni's famous and legendary carvings and jewelry. I bought the fish hook necklace which I wear almost everyday. I have had numerous compliments on it. Keoni is a master and perfectionist, when it comes to his trade. He is concerned about the conservation of his island and being able to maintain the Hawaiian culture, so that future generations will be able to provide for their families and not harm nature. He is a very humble and down to earth artist.I highly recommend taking a long look at his art, and investing in a piece of your own!

My boyfriend and I are here on Kauai for the first time and met Keoni and Heather at the Hanalei Sunshine Market. I had my eyes open for a meaningful souvenir of our first romantic vacation together and of the life stories that have led us to one another. Keoni's gorgeous pearl-adorned fish hooks caught my eye right away for their beauty, elegance, symbolism, and impeccable execution. My boyfriend noticed my interest in these pieces and purchased a beautiful pendant for me as a gift. I feel so happy to wear this gorgeous reminder of our trip to Kauai, our love, the Islands and the centrality of personal strength, resolve and compassion in achieving our heart's desires. Mahalo!

While on vacation in Jan. of this year, my husband bought me a beautiful black pearl necklace for our 35th wedding anniversary. I love my necklace and wear it with pride. I have had lots of compliments on it, including from strangers. The history of the fishing hook is fascinating and truly authentic Hawaian. The craftsmanship of the piece is exquisite. Keoni is an exceptional artist. Mahalo.

On a recent visit to the Hanalei Farmers Market on the beautiful island of Kauai, I left adorned not with fresh fruit and vegetables, but instead with an absolutely gorgeous pendant and a shopping experience that I will always treasure. The single barb black pearl pendant looks and feels elegant. I will wear it with pride as it carries not just the beauty of the pearl, but the memory of meeting Keoni and Heather and the aloha spirit of the island. Thank you for sharing not only your incredible talent, but also a little bit of yourself with us.

I have been blessed knowing Keoni for many years. He has crafted from his own imagination (and his research into ancient Hawaiian arts) many unique pieces for me, including a major curly koa hand weapon with Great White Shark teeth (no wimpy tigers for me!), and many fish hooks -- including the beautiful 6-barb (Maui style) hook in 18K gold, and now the gorgeous single-barb Tahitian black pearl pendant, which I'm giving to my wife for Valentine's Day.
Mahalo Nui Loa Keoni, I am proud to call you my friend.
